So This Guy had Bromism

I watched this YouTube short recently. This video appears to be the almost 18 minute version, same talking head, same story. I watched a few seconds of it, enough to learn the detail that he had studied nutrition in school.

He's a Black American and at the risk of people decrying me as racist, I can't help but wonder if or how much Black Americans are STILL being shafted educationally even though it's NO LONGER illegal for them to learn to read, like it was under slavery.

Because methinks someone didn't get something drilled into his head about something.

That's a somewhat idle passing thought. My OTHER thought is more like "WOW, the field of nutrition is even more borked than I THOUGHT it was!" Rest assured, I already had a pretty poor opinion of what passes for "knowledge" of nutrition.

I've done great and wondrous things for my incurable genetic disorder via nutrition and dietary and lifestyle changes, but I struggle to explain the process because most studies about so-called nutrition are:

1. Self reported data, known to be highly unreliable.

2. Where we then infer general information like "Nuts must be good for you because lots of nurses report eating them regularly and are in generally better than average health."

It's ATROCIOUS.

Nurses couldn't POSSIBLY be in GENERALLY better health than average due to better germ control practices or exercising regularly or any of a number of other factors rooted in being better educated than average about health topics, no. MUST be the NUTS they CLAIM they ate which we in no way verified.

It's no wonder people think I'm just making crap up.

Anyway, IF you are up shit creek without a paddle because you have some mystery ailment or some ailment doctors can't really fix and WANT to don a party hat or tinfoil hat or whatever and get on my band wagon:

1. Start a HEALTH JOURNAL where YOU record what YOU actually eat and any symptoms blah blah blah you are going through.

2. IF and ONLY IF ***YOUR*** records and firsthand experience suggest to you "Maybe that BITCH isn't NUTS. I think pork might be raising my blood pressure and salt might be bringing it down." or similar conclusion based on my writing (such as "Maybe her ideas about epilepsy aren't nutso because, damn, I seize more when I have periods from hell."), then you are free to tweak your nutritional status accordingly.

If you need additional nutrients, I highly recommend the following process:

1. Start with supplements because it's the ONLY way to add a nutrient in isolation. Dietary tweaks do not do that.

2. Add ONE and ONLY ONE individual nutrient in supplement form. Give it at least a week, preferably longer before you make ANY other changes.

With my blood pressure hypothesis, salt can be added to food easily because we already do that. Salt is typically added from a shaker at the table.

Try swapping out pork for something else and/or look for other ways to reduce your intake of selenium.

Do those two steps SEPARATELY to see how you react. I would add salt first because it's similar to taking a supplement in isolation. It's always more complicated to figure out what is going on with dietary changes.

Please READ my other health site atypical Cystic Fibrosis before going off on this adventure. There's a piece called Getting Started that covers this process more in depth. Please READ it and everything it links to.

I am not a doctor and stories like the clip that started this piece make me wonder if I should throw in the towel ENTIRELY on this madcap thing I do of giving my opinions about health stuff on the Internet.
